"a caterpillar doesn't just grow into a butterfly. a caterpillar must undergo metamorphosis, and a cocoon is where a caterpillar risks it all: enters total chaos, undergoes total rebuilding, and is born to a new way of living. only in taking the risk of entering that inert cocoon can the caterpillar go from dormancy to potency, from ugliness to beauty."

my fave pinoy music video

Ikaw ba'y nalulungkot
Naiinip, nababagot?
Ikaw ba'y napapagod
Araw gabi'y puro kayod?

Buhay mo ba'y walang saysay
Walang sigla, walang kulay?
Bawat araw ba'y pareho
Parang walang pagbabago?

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Kasama ang pamilya
Barkada at buong grupo
Para mag-enjoy nang todo.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

i first saw the video of biyahe tayo! in 2004. the first time i saw it, i instantly fell in love with it! to this day, it's my favorite pinoy music video. more than the video, i like the song. it's catchy and it makes me really want to sing along, grab a bag and go off to wherever in the country to see things for myself!

no, no, no... i don't want regine velasquez's version playing in the malls. puhleeez. her mariah-nic version does not hold a candle to this powerhouse version!

a collage of biyahe tayo! video grabs

Nagpasyal ka na ba
Sa Intramuros at Luneta
Palawan, Vigan at Batanes
Subic, Baguio at Rice Terraces?

Namasdan mo na ba
Ang mga vinta ng Zamboanga
Bulkang Taal, Bulkang Mayon
Beach ng Boracay at La Union?

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Mula Basco hanggang Jolo
Nang makilala ng husto
Ang ating kapwa-Pilipino.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

the opening sequence of the video has this to say: 21 top filipino artists. 5 exciting recording days. 1 song. about one great country. oh, maybe i don't quite agree with the use of the word 'great' there given the current state of the country, but, hey, it's a wonderful video about a beautiful country with beautiful people (grandstanders, crooks, traditional politicians and corrupt officials are definitely not counted).

From city to city,
Seven thousand and a hundred plus islas
Sa mahal kong Pilipinas
Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao ating puntahan.
Huwag maging dayuhan sa sariling bayan!

Nasubukan mo na bang
Mag-rapids sa Pagsanjan
Mag-diving sa Anilao
Mag-surfing sa Siargao?

Natikman mo na ba
Ang sisig ng Pampanga
Duriang Davao, Bangus Dagupan
Bicol Express at Lechong Balayan?

Tara na, biyahe tayo,
Nang makatulong kahit pano
Sa pag-unlad ng kabuhayan
Ng ating mga kababayan.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

the video is a product of the “WOW Philippines Biyahe Tayo” program of the department of tourism and bonamine (meclizine hci) of pfizer consumer healthcare. the artists who appeared in it are members of the artists for philippine tourism. they shared their talents and extended their support without remuneration. wow!

another collage of biyahe tayo! video grabs

Nakisaya ka na ba
Sa Pahiyas at Maskara
Moriones at Ati-Atihan
Sinulog at Kadayawan?

Namiesta ka na ba
Sa Penafrancia sa Naga
Umakyat sa Antipolo
Nagsayaw sa Obando?

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Upang ating matamo
Ligaya at pagkakaibigan
Kaunlaran, kapayapaan.

Halika, biyahe tayo,
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

the lyrics of biyahe tayo! was penned by rene nieva and those who lent their voices and musical talents are (according to their sequence of appearance in the video) freddie aguilar, sharon cuneta, janno gibbs, ogie alcasid, jolina magdangal, violinist john lesaca, flutist jong cuenco, rey valera, joey ayala, apo hiking society, rapper francis magalona, april boy 'idol' regino, jessa zaragoza, rico j. puno, nina, paolo santos, rico blanco and lea salonga. quite a lineup, don't you think?

Tara na, biyahe tayo
Upang ating matamo
Ligaya at pagkakaibigan
Kaunlaran, kapayapaan.

Halika, biyahe tayo
Nang ating makita
Ang ganda ng Pilipinas
Ang galing ng Pilipino.

Halika, biyahe tayo...
WOW Philippines...

watching the video, particularly its last few shots, always makes me feel good and proud. the artists are enjoying what they're doing and are having fun... and the places are beckoning to be visited! it's an upper that makes one forget, even just for a few minutes, the big mess on this part of the planet.

how i wish the major philippine tv networks will do more public service by airing biyahe tayo! for free (even just once a day) instead of making us endure those sickening doses of round-the-clock hair care and skin care commercials.

hey, summer days are here. tara let's, biyahe tayo! (...kahit sa panaginip lang, kung walang pera. hehehe.)

note: listen to the biyahe tayo! song by various OPM artists here. the music video can be downloaded here.

  8. i just voted for your blog as best for april.

  9. Hi, this is Rene Nieva. I just read your kind comments about Biyahe Tayo!, whose lyrics I have been privileged to write. I’m glad that it has struck a responsive chord among our fellow Filipinos not just in the Philippines but all around the world. I never imagined that the words I wrote would have such an positive impact in terms of renewing the sense of patriotism of our countrymen, especially the young.

    Again, many thanks.

    Rene

  10. wow! i feel so honored that you took the time to leave a comment in my blog. you’re welcome. you deserve the kind comments. it’s not everyday that we encounter great songs and when we do, it’s just fitting to let the whole world know… most especially because, in this case, the beautiful song promotes such a beautiful country — a country we call OURS. in behalf of all people who appreciate Biyahe Tayo!, thank you so much! we’re proud to sing your song, so we’re making it our song! more power!

  12. I like Regine Velasquez version. Of course kahit tanungin mo yung music professionals, yung unang version ang walang binatbat. Mas tumaas ang turismo ng kay Regine na ang ine-air. Mariah-nic? If you really have ears, Regine’s voice is very different from Mariah. Regine is a lyric Soprano with strong powerful voice. Mariah has a soft husky type and powerful. When it comes to singers, i think no one has the right to give comments unless you are in the position. (If u r a singer or a BS Music grad) Hindi pwede opinion sa music dahil merong STANDARD ang music.

  13. yeshua, if you like the region velasquez version, so what is that to me? don't be too hasty with your arguments, if you can even call them that. there are a lot of factors to consider when it comes to "boost(s)" in philippine tourism, it (they) cannot necessarily be attributed to "biyahe tayo" alone. i do have ears and when i say mariah-nic i'm not referring to voice quality, i'm talking about singing style. you have your ears, i have my ears and by my ears' (and eyes', too!) standards, i prefer the original version. there's nothing you can do to make me change my mind about that, in the same way that there's nothing i can do if your choice is the other one. i believe na pwede ang opinion sa music kahit pa sabihing may standard. galangan na lang tayo ng opinion.

  16. hey, i love this song/video too. bummer that ive only recently found out about it. i saw that you had the list of the artists in order of their appearance, but (i may just be a little slow. lol) i can't seem to figure out what the name of the girl in the grey shirt is; the one that does the high trills. according to your list, i think it might be nina, but if it is, then nina who? i don't live in the philippines so naturally, im not exposed to a lot of filipino entertainment. but i do get as much as i can when time allows. anyway, if you could tell me, that would be great. i've added my email to the place where it says email, lol, so if you had time to email me, then you could. =) thanks.

  17. Love Biyahe Tayo. I'm a kano guy married to a Cebuana for 17 years now and I really love this song. Come on! I'm ready to travel back to the Philippines right now. The video is great but I've been trying in vain to find an mp3 version that I can download and burn to a CD and take along in the car with me. Can anybody help me with this?

  18. Gotta change my answering machine
    Now that I'm alone
Cuz right now it says that we
    Can't come to the phone
And I know it makes no sense
Cuz you walked out the door
But it's the only way I hear your voice anymore
    (it's ridiculous)
    It's been months
And for some reason I just
    (can't get over us)
    And I'm stronger than this
    (enough is enough)
    No more walkin round
    With my head down
    I'm so over being blue
    Cryin over you

And I'm so sick of love songs
    So tired of tears
So done with wishing you were still here
Said I'm so sick of love songs so sad and slow
So why can't I turn off the radio

is that what you wanna stress? watever but please to readers do check BPO
